Weekly Reflections: Strength Training

Weekly Reflections: Strength Training

I write this latest instalment in between keeping an eye on the action on the first day of the world athletics champs in Doha. I have fond memories of attending the event in London two years ago as part of the New Zealand team. This time around I will be following the performances of a mixed contingent of kiwis, Brits, Canadians, and a couple of Americans who are coached by friends in the sport. Certainly less spectators in the crowd, but it does look a little warmer there than I recall it being in London…

This week’s offering centres on strength training, which is part of the provision for most of the Prepared ATH clientele.

Weekly Reflections: The Initial Athlete Assessment

Weekly Reflections: The Initial Athlete Assessment

Having survived another week navigating the roads and Vancouver drivers’ idiosyncratic interpretation of traffic laws to successfully remain on two wheels, we are back with a further instalment on the Prepared ATH project.

This week was a bit of a transition week on the coaching front, so I decided to use this week’s offering to outline for readers the first step in the process when I start to work with a new client. The initial assessment is the universal starting point for all clients, regardless of the stream (Develop | Prepare | Return).

Weekly Reflections: Building Relationships and Collaboration

Weekly Reflections: Building Relationships and Collaboration

The response to last week’s first instalment has been positive, so that seemed to merit sharing another update. As I rode in the rain on my way back from coaching this morning I pondered what I should share this week, in between marvelling at how many drivers in Vancouver apparently have no grasp of how roundabouts work. The chosen theme this week is relationships and collaboration.

Following on from the Prologue we shared, welcome to the first of perhaps many regular instalments reflecting on the week’s coaching and updating on the Prepared Athlete Training and Health project.

Self-Therapy Tools Part Two: What, When, and How...

Self-Therapy Tools Part Two: What, When, and How...

More enlightened training environments are throwing light on the benefits of ready access to performance therapy on a daily basis at the training facility. Whilst a growing audience is taking note, the reality for the majority of athletes is that they remain in less evolved systems and training environments and thus lack this provision. For the unfortunate majority self-therapy tools offer a substitute to hands-on manual therapy. In part one of this post we made the selection of what self-therapy tools merit the precious space in an athlete's kit bag. In this follow-up post we will now discuss the what, when, and how. As we will explore, these tools have various applications in different instances; we will introduce some sample techniques and exercises to illustrate these applications and also to help guide athletes seeking to use these tools to best effect.

Prologue: The What and the Why...

Prologue: The What and the Why...

As we embark on this fledgling venture, it seems a good time to articulate the ‘why’ behind Prepared Athlete Training & Health, and equally importantly the ‘what’. Why have we chosen this path (pun intended), and why now? We will also share the purpose of this initiative, and elucidate practically what it is we aim offer to the different types of clientele we are seeking to serve. Finally, whilst the Origin Story outlines the journey that has taken us to this point, given this is an endeavour for humans by humans, this post also aims to capture some of that story from a more personal perspective.
